While people age they may develop different eye problems. They may be
dangerous, if left untreated. There are various eye problems adults
suffer from. There are various eye problems which may occur because of
aging. Some of the most common types of eye problems in adults are:
- Posterior vitreous detachment
- Glaucoma
- Cataracts
- Presbyopia
- Age-related muscular degeneration
Posterior vitreous detachment:
It is one of the serious eye problems in adults in which vitreous
humour separates from retina. Vitreous humour is a gel which fills the
space between the lense and retina. This condition is common in adults.
This eye problem is less common in people below 40. The glassy or
vitreous humour which fills the eye behind the lenses shrinks and
detaches from retina. Its main symptoms are flashing light and floaters.
Glaucoma:
It is one of the dangerous eye problems in adults which may result in
permanent blindness. In this eye condition optic nerve is damaged.
Damaged optic nerve may permanently damage the vision. It usually starts
after the age of 40 years. It has two main types. One is open angle
glaucoma and the other is angle closure glaucoma.
Cataracts:
A cataract is one of the common eye problems in adults in which
clouding develops in lense of eye. Its most common cause is vision loss
after the age of 40. Clouding develops because of the buildup of protein
in lenses. Light can not pass clearly through such lense, resulting
loss of vision. Smoking, air pollution and alcohol consumption may be
one of the causes of cataracts.
Presbyopia:
Presbyopia is an eye problem in adults in which the vision is blurred
with age. It affects the near vision adversely. Other symptoms of
Presbyopia are headaches, fatigue and eye strains. It is an age related
process which is caused by gradual loss of flexibility of eye lense. Eye
lense becomes hard and loses its ability to focus the objects. Adults
suffering from this eye condition feel eye fatigue or eye strains.
Age-related macular degeneration:
It is one of the serious eye problems in adults which destroy the
sharp central vision, which is needed to see objects clearly. It is also
known as macular degeneration. Macula is a part of eye, which allows
your eye to observe fine details of an object. Age-related muscular
degeneration adversely affects the macula; making you eyes unable to see
objects clearly. Aside from age factor, there are several other factors
which may cause age-related macular degeneration or macular
degeneration:
- Farsightedness
- Obesity
- Smoking
- Light eye color
- Sun exposure
Macular degeneration has two main types:
- Non-neovascular macular degeneration
- Neovascular macular degeneration
Non-neovascular macular degeneration:
Non-neovascular macular degeneration is also known as dry macular
degeneration. It progresses very slow, resulting in vision loss. It
rarely causes complete blindness.
Neovascular macular degeneration:
Neovascular macular degeneration is also known as wet macular
degeneration. This is one of the most severe eye problems in adults
which occur because of leakage of new blood vessels which grow
underneath the retina. It may result in loss of vision or legal
blindness.
